Spam, Viruses and Phishing
A short newsletter with tips on
How To Make The Internet Work For You

Spam Reduction & Virus Exposure:
We are all trying to reduce the number of spam emails in our inbox by using many kinds of filters, but one of the most efficient ways to avoid spam is simply to reduce your email address exposure to worms, viruses and spammers.
  1. If you are sending an e-mail to more than a few recipients use BCC. This way one's e-mail address has a lesser chance of landing in someone’s computer infected by a worm or virus that collects e-mail addresses for spammers or to spread viruses.

  2. Many websites ask you to register and provide an e-mail address and we are all concerned that we might end up getting unwanted e-mails. The solution is to have a 2nd e-mail address that we can discard at any time.  Provide the second address for registration, and for convenience, you can forward all e-mails sent to this buffer address to your main mailbox.

Internet Phishing (not fishing):
In a typical case, you will receive an urgent e-mail trying to convince you to immediately respond and provide personal information such as social security number, credit card information, user names & passwords. In a phishing scam, you could be redirected to a phony website that may look exactly like the real thing.

How to avoid falling into such scam:
  1. Never provide your personal information and passwords in response to an unsolicited request. If you believe the email may be legitimate, contact the institution independently of any instruction you received.

When providing personal information, make sure that you are using a secured website.

  2. Avoid providing information like social security and drivers license numbers over the web

If you provide the requested information,
you may find yourself the victim of identity theft.

Never provide your personal information and passwords
in response to an unsolicited request.

If you believe the contact may be legitimate, contact the institution yourself independently of any instruction you received.
